You may remember discussing a problem with ChatGPT but not which conversation contains it. The chat title may be vague, while the term you remember appears only inside an answer. Opening history items one by one becomes more expensive as your archive grows.

The Chats view in ConvoFinder searches conversations that have been identified and indexed locally. Results show the matching prompt and answer excerpt. ChatGPT changes location only after you choose a specific result.

What you will be able to do

  • Choose between current-chat, cross-chat, and knowledge search
  • Write queries that match how you remember old work
  • Return from a result to the correct ChatGPT conversation
01

Choose the right search scope first

Current searches only the ChatGPT conversation in front of you. Chats searches conversations that ConvoFinder has identified and indexed locally. Knowledge searches only the answers you deliberately saved. Choosing the correct layer removes unnecessary results before you type anything.

Use Chats when you cannot remember the conversation title but know a term appeared somewhere. Use Knowledge when you already curated the answer into a topic.

  • Something earlier on this page: use Current.
  • A discussion from another thread: use Chats.
  • A conclusion you deliberately kept: use Knowledge.
02

Search locally indexed ChatGPT conversations

Open Chats and confirm that the conversation directory is available. ConvoFinder stores the conversations and turns it recognizes in local browser storage. Initial indexing time depends on the amount of history and the data exposed by the ChatGPT page.

Once you enter a query, results replace the directory so the panel can focus on matching content. Previous and next move through results inside the extension without repeatedly moving ChatGPT. Clicking a specific result performs the actual navigation.

  1. 1
    Open Chats

Switch to the Chats view and let the local history directory finish indexing.

  2. 2
    Enter a distinctive term

Start with a project name, technology, error code, file name, or a proper noun from the conclusion.

  3. 3
    Compare prompt and answer excerpts

Confirm the surrounding task before opening a conversation that merely contains a common word.

  4. 4
    Choose the result

ConvoFinder opens the matching ChatGPT conversation and navigates to the associated turn.

03

Design queries around memory clues

The most common retrieval failure is not missing data but an overly broad query. Memory usually preserves something rare: a command, module name, business metric, or the option you eventually chose. Use that element first.

If the result set is large, replace the term with a more distinctive synonym instead of adding generic words. If no result appears, try the expanded acronym, alternate language, or a keyword you may have saved manually.

  • Weak queries: performance, code, option, issue.
  • Strong queries: an exception type, configuration key, table name, or project codename.
  • Useful metadata: save future aliases and terminology as keywords.
04

Understand and maintain the local index

ConvoFinder keeps its conversation index in the current browser by default. Signing into a membership account does not automatically upload ChatGPT text. Think of it as a personal retrieval layer inside the browser, not a replacement for ChatGPT cloud history.

If a ChatGPT conversation is removed, the site structure changes, or browser storage is cleared, part of the directory may need to be rebuilt. Do not rely on historical search as the only home for critical work. Save durable answers to Knowledge and export important material.

  • Export critical answers before moving to another computer or browser profile.
  • Improve unclear titles and keywords while the context is fresh.
  • Use cross-chat search for discovery and Knowledge for durable retrieval.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT not move when I press previous or next in search?

This prevents result review from repeatedly taking control of the main page. ConvoFinder navigates only after you click the selected result.

Does membership upload my ChatGPT content to a server?

Not automatically. Membership handles identity and license status. Conversation indexes, keywords, and knowledge bases are stored locally by default.

What should I do if an older conversation is missing?

Confirm that it still exists in ChatGPT history and let the Chats directory finish indexing. If it is still absent, open that conversation once so the visible content can be added to the local index.
